We stock and install Elite-compatible welding and fabrication parts for gate systems across Jacksonville, with most repairs running between $180 and $650 installed depending on the part, the gate size, and how much field welding the repair requires. Most Elite gate failures we see here aren’t the welds themselves giving way. They’re the hinge welds cracking from years of salt air, the post base plate rusting through where pooled irrigation water sits against it, or a weld seam that was never fully penetrated from the factory and finally let go after a few thousand open-and-close cycles.
When an Elite gate fails at a weld point, you’ll usually hear it before you see it. A gate that starts dragging on the strike side, a top hinge that creaks like a screen door in a storm, or a panel that suddenly sits a half inch lower than it did last month. That’s the weld telling you it’s tired. You’ll see the crack when you look at the bottom of the hinge barrel or where the frame corner meets the picket. In Jacksonville, we also see a pattern of one specific failure more than anywhere else we work: the bottom rail weld on ornamental steel gates, eaten from the inside by yard sprinklers that hit the same spot every morning.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite’s residential and light commercial gate lines share most of their weld geometry across the SL3000, SL5000, and CL series, but there’s a compatibility gotcha with the hinge tab spacing on the SL3000 versus the SL5000 that matters if you’re swapping a panel rather than repairing the weld in place. The SL3000 hinge tabs are set at 9-inch centers and use a 3/8-inch barrel pin. The SL5000 moves to 12-inch centers with a half-inch pin, and the CL series on ornamental gates often uses a welded pintle plate rather than a bolt-on tab at all. Measure the centers before you buy anything.
For OEM versus aftermarket on Elite specifically, our honest take is this: the OEM steel is fine, but the factory weld process on Elite’s lighter residential frames leaves the throat of the weld shallow in places. We’ve sectioned enough failed Elite welds to see it. For the hinge tabs and post base plates, many Jacksonville owners do better with a heavier aftermarket tab, a 1/4-inch plate instead of the factory 3/16, because the aftermarket versions are made for marine environments. Salt air is not polite to a 3/16-inch plate. The decision really comes down to whether we’re repairing an existing weld or replacing a failed part outright. Cody Beckman will tell you the same thing on site: tell me exactly what the gate is doing, and we can usually figure out what it needs before I even open the panel.

Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate leans toward the latch side, and the hinges look fine. The post base plate has rusted through or the weld under the plate has let go. In Jacksonville yards, this is almost always irrigation splash or standing water at the post base, and it happens slowly over three to five years.
- The gate makes a metallic tick or groan when it opens, but only at one pressure point. A crack in a weld flexes as the gate moves, and the sound is sharp and specific. It’s not the bearings and it’s not the operator. It’s the steel arguing with itself.
- You can see a hairline crack that weeps a brown film after rain. That’s corrosion working inside the crack. By the time you see the brown trail, the weld is no longer structurally sound.
- One corner of the gate frame feels “soft” when you push on it. A gate panel should feel solid from corner to corner. If a bottom rail flexes under hand pressure, that weld has separated from the inside and the panel is only being held in place by the pickets.
- The gate was hit by a vehicle, and now it drags even after the hinges were adjusted. Impact bends don’t come back. The weld points at the hinge tabs or frame corners are the first to fail after a hit, and the panel will never hang true again without welding work.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Jacksonville, a welded hinge tab replacement on an Elite gate typically runs $180 to $320 per tab, including the new steel tab, field welding, and grinding the old tab off clean. A full post base plate replacement with the gate re-hung runs $350 to $650 on most residential gates, depending on whether the post itself needs to be cut down to clean steel and how much irrigation line has to be moved. A crack repair weld, where we grind out the bad weld, re-weld the seam, and dress it, usually runs $140 to $260 per seam.
Every price is written before we start. No surprise invoice at the end, no “well, it turned out to be more than we thought” conversation. The written price covers the parts, the labor, the cleanup, and the re-alignment of the gate after the weld work is done. We back every weld with the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the weld cracks again within a year, we make it right. That’s not a wink and a handshake, that’s the promise.

You can safely identify the problem yourself. Take a flashlight and look at the weld points where the hinge tabs meet the gate frame and where the post base plate meets the post. Look for hairline cracks, brown weeping, or a flat rust bloom across the plate. Do not try to weld an Elite gate yourself. Gate welding is not a tune-up job. The panel is heavy, the hinge alignment has to be held precisely while the weld cools, and a bad weld on a swinging gate becomes a 300-pound steel panel in motion. That’s a dangerous object in a yard with kids, pets, and delivery drivers. If the weld fails while the gate is swinging, the panel comes off its hinge or folds at the seam.
If you’re not sure whether what you’re looking at is a crack or just a paint scratch, call (904) 250-0188 and describe it to us. We’ll tell you honestly if it sounds cosmetic or structural. If it’s structural, we’ll schedule the repair and show up with the parts, the welder, the drop cloths, and the written price.
FAQs
How long do Elite gate welds last in Jacksonville? Most factory welds on Elite residential gates hold up for 8 to 12 years in Jacksonville before the first crack appears, though gates near the Intracoastal or with irrigation splash on the post base often fail 2 to 4 years sooner due to salt corrosion. Call us at (904) 250-0188 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing on your exact model.
Can a cracked weld be repaired, or does the whole part need to be replaced? A cracked weld can usually be ground out and re-welded in place if the surrounding steel is still sound, and we can tell by looking at the corrosion around the crack. Replacement only makes sense when the steel itself is too thin or too rust-pitted to hold a new weld. Call (904) 250-0188 and we’ll give you a straight answer before we touch anything.
How long does a weld repair or hinge tab replacement take? Most single-weld repairs and hinge tab replacements on Elite gates take us 60 to 90 minutes on site, and the gate is fully operational the same day. A full post base replacement runs 2 to 3 hours including the concrete patching and re-hang. Call (904) 250-0188 and we’ll give you a time window, not a mystery.
Do you stock Elite weld repair parts on the truck? We keep hinge tabs, post base plates, and weld filler in standard Elite sizes on the truck, and we can fabricate the heavier aftermarket options in our Jacksonville shop within one to two days if your gate needs them. Call (904) 250-0188 and we’ll confirm the part before we schedule the visit.
Call Us for a Straight Answer and a Written Price
If your Elite gate is cracking, dragging, or ticking, call (904) 250-0188. A live person answers, day or night, and we’ll talk you through what we think is happening before we ever set foot on your property. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, we’ll lay drop cloths and wear shoe covers when we’re working inside your home, and we’ll send you a photo of the cleanup before we leave. That’s how we work, and that’s the way it’s been since 2009. We’re an independent Jacksonville gate repair company, not affiliated with Elite, and that means we work for you, not for the brand on the sticker.
We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, so if you have more than one gate on the property, there’s a good chance we can handle the whole job in one visit.
