BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace BFT keypads and intercom modules throughout Jacksonville, and most keypad swaps run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on the model and whether the wiring behind the faceplate is still sound. We stock BFT-compatible keypads and intercom components on our trucks, so if your part is a common one, we can usually handle it the same visit. The way owners typically discover the failure is simple: the gate works fine from the remote or the phone app, but the keypad outside the gate stops answering, or the intercom crackles even when nobody is pressing the call button.

Call (904) 250-0188

That split between “remote works” and “keypad doesn’t” is the single most useful diagnostic clue. It means the operator itself is fine. The problem is in the access device, the wiring between it and the control board, or the board’s input terminal. None of those fixes require replacing the operator, which is good news for the budget. Cody Beckman has been sorting out BFT hardware long enough to know that a keypad that looks dead is often just fighting corroded terminals or a punched-in rubber membrane, not a failed circuit.

One thing we’re clear about up front: we’re an independent Jacksonville gate repair company, not a BFT factory service center. That independence matters in a useful way. We’re free to tell you honestly whether an aftermarket equivalent will outlast the original part in Florida humidity, and we don’t have a quota to push OEM-only replacements. The price you get is the installed price, written down before we unclip a single wire.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT keypads and intercom modules follow a few distinct generations, and matching the right replacement to the right controller is the first real test of the job. The older MITTO line and the KUSTOS keypads share a 2-wire or 4-wire protocol that is mostly gone from new installs but still common on Jacksonville homes where the gate went in ten or fifteen years ago. The newer ALENA, KLEIO, and the PERSEO intercom series run on BFT’s current communication bus, and they are not backward-compatible with the older wiring. You cannot put a KLEIO on an old MITTO feed and expect it to talk to the board. This compatibility gotcha is the number one reason for a “new keypad that still doesn’t work” complaint.

If your BFT keypad is blank, flip it over and look for the model label printed into the back housing, usually near the screw bosses. It will say something like “KUSTOS BT A 10” or “MITTO KEYPAD.” That label matters more than what the gate looks like from the driveway. As for OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s own keypads are sealed well against rain, but the rubber membrane buttons harden and crack after six or seven years of Jacksonville sun. Good aftermarket equivalents from names like Vivid or Electro-BFT spec sheets often use a UV-stabilized silicone membrane, which handles the Florida exposure better than the early OEM membranes did. A honest talk about which one makes sense for your gate is part of the estimate.

For intercom units specifically, the failure is rarely the microphone itself. It’s usually the speaker cone, which rots at the surround from humidity and salt air, or the audio relay on the control board. If you live closer to the water in neighborhoods like San Marco or Ortega, expect speaker and terminal corrosion to show up faster than it would further inland.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but doesn’t activate the gate. The brain of the keypad is still getting power, but the button membrane has cracked and the keypress signal is either not reaching the controller or is being misread. This one often gets worse after rain, when moisture seeps under the membrane.
  • Intermittent entry, worse in the morning or afternoon. Jacksonville’s temperature swings expand and contract the housing, and a hairline crack in the keypad faceplate lets condensation in at night. The keypad works again once the sun burns the moisture off. The fix is a new sealed face or a new unit, not a code reset.
  • Intercom speaker crackles or plays sound only from the call station inside. The audio path is half-dead. Usually the speaker surround has rotted or the wiring at the outdoor station has corroded. If you hear a constant low hum, the unshielded audio wire may be running too close to the operator’s power feed.
  • You have to press a number two or three times to get it to register. The carbon contacts under the membrane are worn. This is a wear item, plain and simple. It will not improve with cleaning, and it will eventually stop registering certain digits entirely.
  • The intercom rings, but the voice is so quiet you cannot hear the visitor. The outdoor microphone or speaker has degraded. Sometimes a new speaker module solves it; sometimes the board’s audio amplifier has failed. A quick bench test at the panel tells us which, and you get that answer before you pay for anything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Jacksonville, a BFT-compatible keypad replacement typically costs $185 to $340 installed. A BFT intercom module or outdoor audio station replacement typically lands between $260 and $420, with the nicer PERSEO audio-station units at the upper end. If your controller board needs an input repair or a terminal block replacement, add roughly $80 to $120 for the board work labor and connector parts. These are installed prices, not parts-only prices.

What drives the range is whether we are reusing the existing wiring or pulling a new conductor. In Jacksonville, the salt air near the water and the general humidity corrode buried and exposed wire alike. If your wire insulation is stiff and cracked, pulling new wire is the difference between a repair that lasts three years and one that lasts ten. We always quote that decision, and you’ll always get the price in writing before any work starts.

Every BFT keypad or intercom replacement we perform carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair isn’t right, we make it right, no fine print. And per the Cedarwell Care Promise, we lay drop cloths on the floor and put on shoe covers before we step inside your home, and we send you a photo of the clean-up before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things you can safely check yourself. First, confirm the keypad has power. If the display is blank and the backlight is out, check the operator’s breaker and any GFCI outlet feeding the control panel. Second, if the intercom is fuzzy, check whether the outdoor station’s faceplate is loose or cracked. Water gets in that way, and a cracked faceplate explains half of Jacksonville audio problems. Tightening a loose faceplate is safe to do with a screwdriver.

Beyond that, we’d rather you call us. BFT keypads and intercoms tie into the low-voltage side of the control board, which is mostly safe to work around, but the board itself sits twelve inches from line voltage.

One wrong probe against the wrong terminal can send 120 volts through the board and turn a $220 keypad replacement into a $900 board replacement. It is not a scare tactic; it is simply the most expensive DIY mistake we see on BFT systems. If the keypad or intercom is acting up, call (904) 250-0188. Tell me exactly what the gate is doing, and we can usually figure out what it needs before I even open the panel.
