BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

If your BFT gate opener has stopped responding or is moving erratically, we stock BFT-compatible replacement motors and control boards on our service trucks, and we install them same-day in most Jacksonville neighborhoods. A typical BFT gate motor replacement in this area runs between $650 and $1,450 installed, depending on your model series and whether the transformer or limit switches need replacing at the same time. Most owners discover the motor has failed when the gate works with the keypad or the remote but won’t budge, or when the motor hums without moving the gate leaf.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been building gate operators since the 1960s, and Jacksonville has a fair share of them on older riverfront and San Marco properties. The motors we most often replace fall into two families: the BFT Deimos series for slide gates and the BFT Phobos series for swing gates. Within those lines, the Deimos BT and Deimos Ultra motors drive most single-family slide gates, while the Phobos actuator arms show up on the ornamental iron double-driveway gates you see throughout Avondale and Ortega.

The compatibility gotcha: BFT changed the motor capacitor values on the Deimos line after 2016. A motor sold as “Deimos-compatible” without the matching capacitor model will work for a few weeks and then overheat in Florida humidity. The model plate matters. Look at the metal tag on your motor housing. If the model starts with “D” followed by a four-digit number like D1130, that’s the older Deimos series. If it starts with “BT” or “UL,” it’s the newer generation and uses a different mounting bracket entirely. Take a photo of that plate before you call anyone, and you’ll save yourself a wasted service fee. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, so we tell you straight when a quality aftermarket motor will do the job and when the OEM part is the only sane option for your specific board.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Is Failing

  • The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This is usually the capacitor. On BFT Deimos units, the capacitor sits in a sealed box that traps condensation in Jacksonville’s summer humidity. Once it fails, the motor can’t start under load, and the hum is the windings trying to spin up.
  • The gate stops mid-travel and reverses on its own. The obstacle detection circuit is reading false resistance, often because the motor bearings are dragging. The board interprets the drag as an obstruction and tells the motor to back off. Replacing the bearings alone rarely works on older BFTs; when we open the housing, the wear is usually across the motor’s drive gear too.
  • You have to hit the remote two or three times before the gate responds. That delay is the motor’s internal thermal switch cycling. It’s not a remote problem. The motor is overheating, waiting to cool, and then accepting the next command. It’ll get worse until it won’t respond at all.
  • The gate is slower than it used to be, especially when it’s cold or after rain. Florida isn’t known for freezing weather, but Jacksonville’s wet season is hard on gate motors. Water intrusion past the gland seal starts as slower travel and ends as a seized rotor. By the time you notice the speed drop, the seal has usually been gone for months.
  • The breaker trips when the gate runs. That’s a shorted winding or a motor drawing way more amperage than the nameplate rating. Do not keep resetting the breaker and trying again. A shorted motor can damage the BFT control board on the next cycle, and then you’re buying both parts instead of one.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Jacksonville, a BFT motor swap runs about $650 to $1,450 installed, assuming the control board is still good. The spread comes down to series. A Phobos swing arm replacement is usually $650 to $900. A Deimos slide gate motor with a new capacitor and drive sprocket lands between $900 and $1,450. If the board needs replacing alongside the motor, add $350 to $550 to the quote.

Every price includes the part, the labor, the capacitor check, limit switch calibration, and a full travel test. We write the number down before any work starts, and it doesn’t change unless we open the panel and find something we couldn’t see from the outside, in which case we stop and show you before proceeding. All BFT motor replacements are covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the install isn’t right, we fix it. No argument, no fine print.

You can check a few things safely without touching the motor itself. Confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped at the panel. Look at the gate leaf and make sure it hasn’t jumped the track or picked up a branch after a storm. Check that the manual release on the operator is fully seated. Those three checks are safe and take five minutes.

Opening a BFT motor housing is not one of the safe checks. These units carry live 120V or 240V into the motor bay, and the capacitor holds a charge even after the breaker is off. A capacitor discharge through the wrong path is a genuine injury, not a scare story. The motors are also heavy, mounted under tension, and wired through boards that don’t forgive reversed polarity. If your gate is doing anything on the symptom list above, call (904) 250-0188 and walk us through it. As I tell customers, tell me exactly what the gate is doing, and we can usually figure out what it needs before I even open the panel.
