BFT access control installation in Jacksonville typically runs between $450 and $1,400 depending on whether you’re replacing an existing keypad, adding a card reader, or wiring in a full telephone-entry system. We stock BFT-compatible parts on the truck and can usually have your system back online the same day we diagnose it. Most homeowners discover the failure the hard way: a keypad that stopped accepting codes after a summer storm, a card reader that beeps but won’t release the gate, or an intercom that rings through to a dead line right when a delivery driver is waiting at the curb.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
We work on the BFT access control lines most common in Jacksonville residential and light commercial gates: the Phobos and Thalia series keypads, the Rigel card readers, the Deimos series controllers, and the Clonix remote-programming system that ties into them. The compatibility gotcha most owners hit involves the BFT wireless protocol. BFT uses a rolling-code system that changed frequency behavior across model generations, so a Phobos N keypad from 2018 and a Phobos L from 2022 may both work on the same operator, but the older Clonix remotes will not pair with a newer Deimos controller without reprogramming. If you have the original keypad, the model number is printed on a label inside the battery compartment or on the back of the faceplate. If the label is gone, a photo of the keypad face and the operator control board usually tells us what we need. We carry OEM BFT parts as well as quality aftermarket equivalents from Linear and other brands we stock, and we’ll walk you through the tradeoff honestly: OEM costs more and matches your existing enclosure perfectly; aftermarket can save you $80 to $150 and performs the same function, but the mounting holes may need a small adjustment.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This is usually a worn membrane or corrosion on the circuit board contacts, not a programming issue. Jacksonville humidity gets inside the enclosure over time, even on the IP-rated units.
- The gate opens, then immediately reverses and stays open. That’s the safety loop or the control board misreading the access signal. We see this often on BFT systems where the wiring from the keypad to the operator has oxidized, especially along the coast near Atlantic Beach.
- You hear the relay click but the gate doesn’t move. The access control is communicating fine; the failure is downstream. That’s an operator or limit switch issue, and fixing the access panel won’t solve it.
- The reader powers up but won’t read cards or fobs. On BFT Rigel readers, the antenna coil is the first component to fail after years of direct sun exposure. It’s a small part, but it means replacing the reader, not the card.
- Intermittent operation, worse after rain. Water intrusion through the conduit or enclosure gasket is the usual culprit. A Jacksonville afternoon thunderstorm can send the system into fault when the connections inside get damp.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
- Keypad-only replacement (Phobos or Thalia series): $450 – $650 installed, including the new keypad, mounting hardware, and reprogramming your existing operator.
- Card reader add-on or replacement (Rigel series): $550 – $800 installed, including new fobs if needed.
- Full access control retrofit with controller and keypad: $900 – $1,400 installed, which covers the controller, keypad, wiring assessment, and integration with your existing BFT operator.
- Telephone-entry or intercom add-on: $1,100 – $1,800 installed, depending on the number of units in the building and the existing wiring condition.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, and any small wiring repairs needed at the access point. You get a written price before we touch anything, and that number is the number you pay. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something isn’t right after the install, we come back and make it right. No fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
On the access control side, there’s a safe do-it-yourself step and a less-safe one. The safe step: check the breaker and the operator’s power source, and look for obvious damage like a cracked keypad face or a loose wire behind the panel. The less-safe step: opening an operator’s control board while it’s live. Those boards carry 24V at the access terminals, but the incoming line side is 120V or 240V, and a slip of the screwdriver in the wrong spot is not a lesson you want to learn standing at your own gate. Even the low-voltage side requires matching wire gauge and twist-on connectors rated for outdoor moisture, and BFT enclosures are tight, which makes shorts easy if you’re not used to the layout. If the keypad is mounted on a brick column or the conduit runs under a driveway, call us. We’re at (904) 250-0188, and we’ll send a background-checked, factory-trained technician who will put on shoe covers before walking through your yard and leave it cleaner than he found it.
FAQs
Expect 5 to 8 years from a keypad or reader in Jacksonville’s heat and humidity. Coastal exposure can shorten that to 4 to 6 years. The control board itself usually lasts 10 years or more if the enclosure stays sealed. Call (904) 250-0188 and we can check the date code on your unit.
Some components are repairable, like corroded terminals or a failed relay on an older Deimos board. But BFT keypads and readers are mostly sealed units, so a dead keypad is a replacement, not a repair. We’ll tell you which one you have before we quote anything.
Most keypad or reader replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. A full controller retrofit runs 2 to 3 hours. Programming your codes and testing the gate cycle is included in that time. If you call us in the morning, we can usually have it done before the kids get home from school.
We stock Phobos and Thalia keypads, Rigel readers, Clonix remotes, and the most common Deimos control boards. If your specific part isn’t on the truck, we can typically source it same-week in Jacksonville and schedule the return visit at no extra trip charge.
