If your Linear gate is sagging, grinding, or catching on the track, you’re likely looking at a hinge and roller replacement. In Jacksonville, we typically install Linear-compatible hinge and roller sets for between $180 and $420, parts included, and most jobs are done in one visit. You’ll hear it before you see it: a low scrape as the gate drags across the concrete, or a rattle that wasn’t there last month. The rollers flatten over time, the hinge pins oval out, and suddenly the gate doesn’t sit square anymore.
We stock Linear-compatible hinges and rollers on the truck, so in most Jacksonville neighborhoods we can handle the replacement on the first visit. The catch is knowing which roller diameter and hinge offset your specific Linear model takes, which is what the next section covers.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s slide gate line includes the SL and SW series, and the hinge and roller hardware varies more than people expect. The roller wheel diameter is the first spec to check: most Linear SL models run a 4-inch steel roller with a sealed bearing, but the SW series can take a 3-inch roller depending on the track profile. If you put a 4-inch roller on a track cut for 3 inches, the gate rides high and the wheels bind against the frame.
Look at the hinge side next. Linear uses both a fixed-pin hinge and an adjustable barrel hinge on different models. The adjustable version lets you re-square the gate without cutting and re-welding, which matters in Jacksonville where slab movement from our sandy soil slowly torques the frame. For OEM versus aftermarket: we generally recommend OEM-equivalent parts for the rollers because the bearing seal quality determines whether you’re back out here in two years or eight. Hinges, though, there are good aftermarket options that hold up fine, especially if the original is an older cast style.
If you’re not sure what you have, snap a photo of the roller and the hinge with a tape measure next to it. Cody Beckman can usually identify the model from that photo before we even schedule the visit.

Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate scrapes or drags when opening. This is almost always a flattened or seized roller. When the bearing inside stops turning, the wheel skids instead of rolling and the flat spot grinds against the track on every cycle.
- The gate sits visibly low at the latch end. A sag like that means the hinge pins are worn or the hinge leaf has pulled from the post. The roller at the far end is now carrying the whole gate’s weight, which accelerates the roller failure.
- You hear a rattle or metal-on-metal chirp as the gate moves. Loose hinge bolts or a roller with a dry bearing will do this. The chirp especially is the bearing race starting to break down internally.
- The gate hesitates or labors mid-travel, then lurches. That’s the operator fighting a roller that doesn’t turn freely. It’s extra strain on the motor and the gearbox, and it shortens their life.
- Visible rust bleeding from the hinge or roller assembly. Near the St. Johns River or the beaches, salt air gets into the bearing and the hinge barrel. Once the rust blooms through the face, the bearing is usually shot inside.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Linear slide gate in Jacksonville, a full hinge and roller replacement runs between $180 and $420 installed. The spread comes down to three things: whether we’re doing both hinges or just the bottom one, whether the roller is a standard 4-inch or a specialty size, and whether the gate needs re-squaring once the new parts are in. Every quote includes the parts, the labor, the adjustment, and a written price before any work starts. You approve that number before we touch a tool.
Here’s how that typically breaks down:
- Roller assembly (steel wheel, sealed bearing, axle): $60 – $120 per roller
- Hinge assembly (barrel or fixed-pin, Linear-compatible): $50 – $140 per hinge
- Labor including alignment and adjustment: $70 – $160
Every part we install is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the hinge or roller fails within a year of our install, we make it right at no charge. No argument, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
You can diagnose this one safely: look for the sag, the drag marks on the concrete, the rust, the rattle. What you shouldn’t do is unbolt a gate hinge without supporting the gate’s full weight first. A slide gate that comes off its hinges can drop fast and take fingers or a foot with it, and the roller axle is under constant load from the gate’s entire weight. We’ve seen Jacksonville homeowners try to prop a gate on a floor jack and a 2×4, and the gate shifted mid-job.
If you want to save a little money, you can certainly clean the track and note the part numbers before you call. But the actual swap is one of those jobs that’s cheap when it goes right and genuinely dangerous when it goes wrong. Our technicians are background-checked, wear shoe covers, and lay drop cloths when the work brings us near the house. Call (904) 250-0188 and tell us exactly what the gate is doing, and we can usually figure out what it needs before we even open the panel.
FAQs
In Jacksonville’s salt-adjacent air and sandy soil, expect 4 to 7 years from factory rollers and hinges. Properties closer to the Intracoastal or ocean tend to run on the shorter end, while inland neighborhoods like Mandarin or Baymeadows often get the longer end.
Rarely. If a hinge pin is worn but the barrel and leaf are still tight, we can sometimes press in a new pin. But once the barrel has ovaled or the weld has cracked, replacement is the honest fix and keeps the gate from sagging again in six months.
Most Linear hinge and roller replacements take 60 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. If the gate needs re-squaring or the track needs a spacer, add another half hour. We give you the timeframe and the written price before the work starts.
We stock the common Linear-compatible roller and hinge sizes on the truck, including the 4-inch roller for the SL series. If your gate needs something unusual, we can usually have it within a few days and we’ll confirm the exact part match before ordering. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates.
